Starfish Camp takes on the Plastic Challenge

This summer the Department of Regional Art Workers, (D.R.A.W.)  took on the  “Plastic Challenge” by bringing greater awareness  to the YMCA’s Starfish campers through an art based environmental stewardship project .

Starfish Campers ages 5-11   learned about the impact of plastics on the oceans ecosystem while making art and, through creating  a collaborative public installation. 

With a primary focus on transforming waste material, the goal was to create works of art with 95% recyclable and otherwise discarded plastics.

 In June, D.R.A.W.  asked the community to participate by cleaning, saving and giving us their plastics. 

We used those contributions!

Campers collaged, painted, printed, assembled and constructed individual elements to be contributed to the final pop-up installation  currently displayed in the formerly known as “Crafts Room” hall.
