Curated Shorts: A Materials Exploration Series
Saturdays, Noon - 3pm, Oct 13 thru Nov 17, 2018
The Department of Regional Art Workers will be hosting materials exploration workshops, in a variety of media. Meet local artists, sample a few selections from our Curated Shorts: Workshops a la carte or attend the entire series and then tell us what you have an appetite for as we move forward.
Introduction to Bookbinding with Kaitlin Patterson
Saturday, Oct. 13, Noon - 3pm
This class will introduce students to bookbinding. Students will learn about the many tools used, and the different structures of bound books. From single sheet books to the antique form of raised bands, you will walk away from this class with a world of knowledge you didn't know existed! Students will complete two books in the three hour class, a pamphlet stitch book with a soft cover, and either a triangle or star accordion book with a hard cover.
Kaitlin is a Kingston High School and School of the Art Institute of Chicago alumni. She has extensive knowledge of bookbinding, from custom made books to antique book repair.
Previously employed in Manhattan at one of the only bookbinding companies in New York, she has returned home to the Hudson Valley to bring her knowledge of bookbinding upstate in hopes of revitalizing a dying art in an ever digitizing world.

Oil Stick Monotype Printmaking with Wayne Montecalvo
Saturday, Oct 20, Noon - 3pm
Make unique, one of a kind prints. Monotype printing is a quick and easy way to create artwork. Several techniques will be covered to incorporate drawing, pattern, mark making and painting. Plexiglas plates will be used to transfer the image to paper. Pigment sticks are ready to use with or without a brush, no solvents, and easy clean up with baby oil.
Wayne received a BFA from the School of Visuals Arts, he currently works
out of his studio in Rosendale, NY. Wayne has worked for the State University of
York, New Paltz campus, and has also taught workshops for various art organizations
throughout the tri-state area.

Kitchen Table Printing with Carol Struve
Saturday, Oct. 27, Noon - 3pm
Learn how to make beautiful, unique prints using basic techniques including trace and monoprint. Prints can be made by hand at your kitchen table or with a press. Experiment with wiping away or adding ink, using stencils and various mark making tools to create dynamic, exciting prints. The beauty of making trace and monoprints is the spontaneity of the process, and the endless possibilities when combining painting, printmaking and drawing techniques. No previous experience in printmaking required.
Carol Struve is a painter who makes prints and resides in Kingston, New York. Her works have been included in numerous regional and national exhibitions including solo exhibitions at A.I.R. Gallery in New York City and the Plains Art Museum, Fargo, ND.

Intro to Paper Cutting with Jenny Lee Fowler
Saturday, Nov. 3, Noon - 3pm
We’ll look at highlights of paper cutting as a folk tradition and a contemporary art. Jenny will demonstrate scissoring and craft knife skills for intricate cutting as well as cover basic design considerations that you’ll put to use creating your own original paper cuttings with instructor support. All materials and tools are provided for class use.
Jenny Lee Fowler is a freelance artist specializing in private commissions, illustration, exhibition, event entertainment, and workshops. She snips traditional silhouette portraits and original paper cuttings with lively detail from forest, field, and folk.
Currently, Jenny is cutting portraits of upstate residents and visitors to the Catskill Mountains Watershed as a Principal Artist with Catskill Waters. Her work has been spotted in Taproot Magazine, Design Sponge, House Beautiful and other print and online venues.

Garment Transformation with Melissa Lockwood
Saturday, Nov. 10, Noon - 3pm
Meet clothing designer Melissa Lockwood of IQTEST and be introduced to fashion upcycling. Trade and transform unwanted clothing into one of a kind garments. Shirts to skirts, skies the limit. Make something fun to wear! Help the planet.
IQTEST, Melissa Lockwood, is an independent designer originally from Iowa. Melissa is an environmentalist and an artist. She makes clothing to educate and show that the off-cut fabrics are a valuable resource not garbage or intended for the recycling bin.
She has made runway worthy and sellable garments with fabrics others chose to throw away. No sewing experience necessary.
$45 Sewing materials and machine included. You bring a few favorite unwanted garments to recycle, share...no prior sewing skills or experience necessary

Exploring Linoleum Block Printing with Chris Seubert
Saturday, Nov 17, noon - 3pm
Linoleum block printing is a direct "relief" printing technique. In its simplest form, an image is created by carving out areas of a lino block and then applying ink to the remaining, raised surfaces. The process is similar to that of woodblock printing.
In this workshop you will create a printing block from a drawing and you will learn several ways to ink and transfer your image .
Editions can be created by hand or on a printing press. This versatile medium is ideal to explore drawing and mark making techniques on paper and fabric.
Chris Seubert is a professor at UCCC and the recipient of SUNY’S Chancellor’s Award. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Dahesh Museum in Manhattan and his work has been published in American Artist Magazine. Chris actively exhibits locally and was featured in the emerging artist show at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz.

Costumed Drawing Sessions: with Rebecca Hellard
Join our weekly drawing sessions. We offer a unique twist on traditional life drawing - our models wear costumes and cosplay. Our models take on characters, providing lively drawing sessions. These are facilitated sessions, giving artists the opportunity to practice their craft and grow their skills in a relaxed, creative environment. All levels are welcome. Ages 14 - never to old

Youth Division
Pop Up Gallery Group
P.U.G.G. is an after school work-study program providing job training in arts management, arts education and entrepreneurship. Students create exhibition spaces for Kingston High School alumni, keeping young artists in the area and creative. Currently, P.U.G.G. is curating shows at the Kingston Artist Collective on the Rondout. P.U.G.G. students provide support for local arts organization events and work assisting teaching artists, through D.R.A.W. programing. We believe that a strong art education significantly enhances the character, quality of life, and economy of the neighborhood.

Middle School Art Studio
Middle School Art Studio is a weekly program designed to offer local middle school students a safe, creative space, to create, explore and express themselves through the arts. Students will draw, paint, print and build gaining experience with a a wide variety of materials and tools. Classes will be taught by local arts professionals and arts educators, each bringing a unique perspective and expertise to the classes. Classes will be offered as a series of 5 sessions, repeated
