The vast continuum of space is something many people find discomforting. 878 million miles away from earth lies the massive and gaseous planet of Saturn. Saturn’s unlivable environment is incomprehensible to humans. However, artist China Blue has enveloped herself in the mysteries of this planet, creating her sound exhibition, Saturn Walk, which is currently on exhibit at The D.R.A.W. Gallery.
This exhibition is a combination of art, sound and science, creating a meditative and interactive experience for the audience. The D.R.A.W. Gallery opens up to a hexagonal maze with continuous low pitched sound filling the space. The viewer is implored to enter the maze's entrance, following the shape, which is intended to mimic the visual pattern of clouds over Saturn’s North Pole. As the viewer walks through the maze they are immersed in the sonic sounds of Saturn’s rings, sounds which was discovered by China Blue and Dr. Seth Horowitz at NASA. The walk consists of long narrow paths, sharp turns and a central space that is only escapable through turning back to reenter the maze.
Saturn Walk is a practice of mindfulness and meditation. As the sound plays, the participant is transported into a realm of the unknown; walking through a labyrinth of weightlessness and calm. The sensation feels as if the viewer is floating through space, connecting the body to the consciousness of the vast cosmos. The walk reveals how truly small we are, reminding the participant of the inconsequential nature of their actions in comparison to the vastness of space. Therefore, Saturn Walk by China Blue stimulates ethereal meditation by imploring the viewer to take a moment in their busy lives to feel the serene flow of the universe.
The D.R.A.W. is thankful for artist China Blue’s participation in the Kingston’s arts community. The exhibition will be on view until December 3rd, so please stop by the D.R.A.W. Gallery at 24 Iwo Jima Lane in Kingston New York to walk the Saturn Walk and feel the weightlessness of the cosmos.
